Packaging

PACKAGING

Please help us in our goal to divert 100% of our skincare packaging from the landfill.

SOURCING

We do our best to source the most environmentally responsible product packaging available; all of our product packaging is either reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

Please refer to this guide for the eco-friendly attributes of each item you might find in your Oil + Water order:

  • Labels - 100% recycled; biodegradable; recyclable; manufactured in the USA

    • Our labels are printed on Reich SAVOY® label stock. “SAVOY® is tree free and made from 100% recovered cotton from the textile industry that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Because cotton is naturally brighter white than wood, the cotton paper making process requires less bleach and other chemicals than papers made from wood. It also requires far less water processing and far less energy. SAVOY® is archival, acid free, recyclable, biodegradable, and elemental chlorine free.”

  • Cardboard soap boxes - 90% recycled with a minimum of 30% post-consumer waste; recyclable; biodegradable; made with paper manufactured in an American paper mill powered by 100% green power (fully renewable hydroelectric generators installed in 1922)

  • Cardboard lip balm tubes - renewable; compostable (remove label as adhesive is not compostable)

  • Glass jars and bottles (closures listed separately below) - reusable; recyclable

  • Plastic lids/caps (polypropylene or PP) - reuseable; recyclable #5

  • Plastic lid/cap liners (low density polyethylene or LDPE) - reuseable; recyclable #4

OUR PRACTICES

  • We source our packaging from trusted suppliers with a strong commitment to environmental/social responsibility and transparency.

  • We source local and/or USA-made packaging whenever possible.

  • We eliminate unnecessary packaging, such as product boxes for products already labeled and contained.

  • We use durable packaging to encourage and maximize long-term reuse.

  • We use glass and paperboard containers instead of plastic containers.

Please keep in mind that we are a small company and we need your help to raise environmental awareness and to improve the environmental responsibility of the packaging industry. We cannot do it alone and we promise that your voice as a consumer matters immensely. As you continue to demand more sustainable options, those options will become increasingly available to small companies like Oil + Water. We invite you to please work with us towards a healthier planet and a more sustainable future.

END-OF-LIFE

Once our products make their way into your hands, we do our best to ensure that their end-of-life is as sustainable as their production and shipment. We encourage you to reuse (best option), return (second-best option), or responsibly recycle (third-best option) our glass bottles and jars.

REUSING

Curious about creative ways to reuse our packaging? Check out our blog post “How to Reuse Our Glass Bottles and Jars.”

RETURNING

If you do not wish to reuse our glass containers, we will take them back and reuse or recycle them for you!

Once you accumulate 3 or more full-size glass containers*, you can request a free return shipping label from us by emailing hello@oilandwaterbk.com. Use the label to ship back any undamaged containers along with their closures (lids, droppers, sprayers, etc.). Once we receive the items, we will email you a coupon for $2 per returned container. To apply your coupon towards a new order, simply enter the provided code at checkout (coupon cannot be combined with any other offer, with the exception of free shipping).

* Our 3-full-size-container minimum is meant to consolidate shipments and avoid excess transport emissions. Please feel free to include any starter/travel size or sample containers in your shipment, as long as you send back a minimum of 3 full-size containers. Please do not send back any cardboard containers - see below for how to properly dispose of these.

RESPONSIBLE RECYCLING

Our product packaging should be accepted by most curbside recycling programs. The materials and recycling codes for our plastic lids and caps are listed above. Please check with your local curbside recycling program to see if they accept #4 and/or #5 plastic. If your local curbside recycling program does not accept any of these materials, there are online programs that will take them. An online search for "LDPE recycling," for example, can yield some options in your local area.
